Austrians in Canada

A small number of Austrian soldiers who enlisted as mercenaries in French regiments came to New France during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and stayed in Canada. The first Austrians to visit British Columbia were crew members of fur traders in the late 1700s. About 99% of the Austrian community in Canada are immigrants who came after World War I and II and their descendants. According to the 1991 census, nearly 94,000 Canadians said they were exclusively (27,135) or partially (66,780) of Austrian background.

There are many Austrian Organizations across Canada that promote Austrian language and culture and help visitors or immigrants into the community.

Austrian-Canadian-Council, AUSTRIAN SOCIETY MONTREAL - TORONTO - OTTAWA, AUSTRIAN CANADIAN SOCIETY CALGARY, JOHANN STRAUSS FOUNDATION - SALT SPRING ISLAND, JOHANN STRAUSS FOUNDATION, AUSTRIAN CANADIAN EDELWEISS CLUB OF REGINA INC., THE FRIENDS OF AUSTRIA INC. - MANITOBA, BURGENLNDER CLUB (TORONTO) INC., STEIRER CLUB INC. TORONTO, THE ALPINE CLUB OF KITCHENER-WATERLOO INC., MIXED CHOIR EDELWEISS, THE CANADIAN-AUSTRIAN SOCIETY OF TORONTO, AUSTRIAN ALPINE SINGERS, and many more.
