The first Serbs to immigrate to Canada were "gold miners" and settled in BC during the 1850's. In the 1900's Serbs from farming districts migrated to Saskatchewan and formed a Serbian community in Regina. Before and after the World Wars many Serbs went to the cities. New Serbian communities were formed in Toronto, Hamilton and Niagara Falls. Many Serbs practice the Serbian Orthodox Religion and built 15 churches and cultural centres across Canada. In 1984 the Serbian church acquired their first national bishop. In many Canadian cities there are traditional Serbian music and dance groups, Serbian theatre, football and sport groups, and Serbian language instruction. The 2006 Canadian census showed that 52 705 people reported Serbian as their mother tongue.
